27th International Conference on
Subterranean Biology

7-12 September 2026 Mangalia, Romania
The 27th ICSB continues the tradition of sharing the most recent and innovative research in subterranean biology, bringing together scientists from around the world who are dedicated to advancing the understanding of subterranean ecosystems.

Location & Scientific Context

Mangalia, located in southern Dobrogea on the Black Sea coast, is situated near Movile Cave, the first known subterranean ecosystem sustained by chemosynthesis. The location was selected to mark the 40th anniversary of its discovery.

Key scientific features of the region include:
  • Movile Cave, situated approximately 3 km from Mangalia, is a chemosynthesis-based ecosystem isolated from the surface for more than 5 million years, harboring the highest number of endemic species (37) compared to other similar ecosystems, and accessible exclusively for scientific research.

  • The karst landforms of Southern Dobrogea are represented by dolines formed through both dissolution and collapse, as well as limestone plateaus, caves, and mineral-rich salt lakes, all of particular relevance to studies in subterranean biology.
